Perion Network (NASDAQ:PERI) Shareholders Will Want The ROCE Trajectory To Continue

If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So on that note, Perion Network (NASDAQ:PERI) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.

What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Perion Network is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.093 = US$26m ÷ (US$417m - US$132m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2021).

Therefore, Perion Network has an ROCE of 9.3%. Even though it's in line with the industry average of 9.3%, it's still a low return by itself.

What Can We Tell From Perion Network's ROCE Trend?

Perion Network has not disappointed with their ROCE growth. More specifically, while the company has kept capital employed relatively flat over the last five years, the ROCE has climbed 101% in that same time. So it's likely that the business is now reaping the full benefits of its past investments, since the capital employed hasn't changed considerably. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.

What We Can Learn From Perion Network's ROCE

To sum it up, Perion Network is collecting higher returns from the same amount of capital, and that's impressive. Since the stock has returned a staggering 557% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if Perion Network can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.
