Manchester City laboured to a 2-0 victory away at Championship strugglers Peterborough United to progress into the FA Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night.

Riyad Mahrez put the Premier League champions ahead with their first shot on target, coming almost exactly an hour into the contest, before Jack Grealish scored his first ever FA Cup goal.

In what would have been a shock, Sammie Szmodics should have put the home side ahead with the game goalless, although City’s quality would eventually prove too much.

City struggled to break down the second tier’s bottom club until Mahrez put them ahead on the hour and then Pep Guardiola’s side doubled their lead with a goal of prime quality.

Phil Foden struck a ball from deep which Grealish brought down with a sublime touch before a clinical finish.

City’s two goals at London Road take their tally up to 103 across all competitions for the season. On Thursday, they will find out who they are set to play in the quarter-finals.
