Is the PhoneSoap sanitizer as good as TikTok says it is?
The $80 phone-cleaning device uses ultraviolet let to eliminate bacteria — but is it really worth the price tag? On TikTok, the product’s thousands of acolytes answer that question with a resounding “yes.”

According to the PhoneSoap website, putting your phone in the sanitizer can eliminate up to 99.99 percent of bacteria. This editor is not a mathematician, but that sounds like a lot.
The support on TikTok is equally staggering. Users on the app have called the product “awesome” and “amazing.”

Is the PhoneSoap sanitizer the best way to clean your phone?
To test the PhoneSoap sanitizer, we went full-on high school science class. We got hold of a microscope, some petri dishes and a bacterial incubator, then started out our experiment.
First, this editor made his phone equally dirty three times — by dropping it outside, coughing it and rubbing it on his face. After the first time, we swabbed for bacteria before cleaning it: This was our “control” group.
The next time, we set the phone inside the PhoneSoap 3 for 10 minutes to sanitize it. Then, we swabbed for bacteria again. The final time, we got the phone dirty then swabbed after wiping it with some standard antibacterial wipes.

Then we waited. Leaving our petri dishes overnight in the incubator, we could watch our bacteria grow in its warm, agar-solution-filled home. The next day, it was time to test.
We checked each petri dish under a microscope, and found that there was way more bacteria in the control dish than the other two. It was a gross realization that means this editor will now be cleaning his phone every day for the rest of his life.
Between the PhoneSoap petri dish and the antibacterial wipe dish, it was tough to compare — we aren’t scientists either, by the way. However, one thing was clear: Both methods did an amazing job of eliminating bacteria.
And ultimately, the PhoneSoap does even more than that. Yes, it may have a hefty price tag, but it’s infinitely reusable and can literally charge your phone as it cleans. So for that reason, we gave it the edge over the disinfectant wipes.
