Playstation 4 Is Sony's 'Fastest-Seller'

Sony (Hanover: SON1.HA - news) says sales of its Playstation 4 have topped 30 million as global price cuts bolster demand for the games console.

The Japanese electronics maker says the product - which went on sale in late 2013 - has been its fastest-selling console.

Sales reached 20 million in March and the latest figures showed that they had topped 30.2 million units by 22 November, with Christmas less than a month away.

Playstation last month helped Sony book its highest second-quarter operating profit in eight years.

Andrew House, president and global chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, said: "We are sincerely grateful that gamers across the globe have continued to choose PS4 as the best place to play since launch two years ago."

Sony said the millions of PS4 owners around the world are spending more time playing games and enjoying entertainment content as the company boosts its offering.

Last month, the firm reported an operating profit for the July-September quarter of 88bn yen (£475m), as strong PS4 sales offset a fall in smartphone sales and kept it on a recovery path after years of decline in its consumer electronics business.

Sony’s game and network business booked a 10% rise in operating profit thanks to strong Playstation software sales (Other OTC: UBGXF - news) .
