Yahoo Finance Here’s how the PlayStation 5’s backward compatibility with PS4 games will work
Sony unveiled new details about the PlayStation 5’s ability to play PS4 titles.
The official PlayStation Support page uploaded a FAQ on the specifics of how the PS5’s backward compatibility with the PS4 will work. “The overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles,” according to the post by Sony.
However, 10 PS4 games didn’t make the cut. As a further disclaimer, Sony wrote that this list is subject to change.
DWVR, Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One, TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2, Just Deal With It!, Shadow Complex Remastered, Robinson: The Journey, We Sing, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition, Shadwen and Joe’s Diner are not playable on PS5.
As for how the backward compatibility works, well, it’s complicated. Sony warned that not all the “functionalities” of the PS4 games may be available when played on PS5 and said that errors and bugs are possible.
If you want to play physical copies of your PS4 games, it’s as easy as putting the disc into your PS5 and booting it up (except for the PS5 digital edition, of course, since it lacks a CD drive). You may need to download an update but otherwise, you’re good to go. Similarly, playing digital PS4 games just requires you to download and play.
But what if you buy a game for PS4 and find out it’s also getting a PS5 release? Is it possible to upgrade your PS4 copy for your PS5 or will you have to buy the same game all over again?
Well, that’s really up to the game’s developer. CD Projekt Red announced that everyone who buys Cyberpunk 2077 for the PS4 or Xbox One will receive free upgrades for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. Other developers may charge extra for the upgrade or declare that customers must buy separate copies.
The PlayStation 5 is launching on Nov. 12 in the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. It will be available everywhere else on Nov. 19.
