PM And Khan Launch Remain 'Guarantee Card'

PM And Khan Launch Remain 'Guarantee Card'

The old Etonian Tory PM, David Cameron, has formed an unlikely political alliance as he unveiled a campaign battlebus with bus driver's son Sadiq Khan, the Labour Mayor of London.

The pair have launched a Britain Stronger in Europe guarantee card, which will be handed out by Remain activists around the country, as they campaign together to keep the UK in the EU.

Meanwhile, Vote Leave supporters Boris Johnson, Theresa Villiers and Penny Mordaunt will be campaigning in Cumbria and County Durham.

The cross-party unity between Mr Cameron and Mr Khan would have been unthinkable just a few weeks ago.

During the bitter London mayoral election campaign, the Prime Minister claimed Mr Khan had links to extremists and Labour accused the Tories of racism.

Mr Khan admits he is never going to be best friends with Mr Cameron, but says he does not want to be at permanent war with him or hold grudges and he is willing to put aside their differences to campaign with the Prime Minister for the UK to remain in the EU.

The five pledges on the Remain campaign's guarantee card are:

:: Full access to the EU's single market

:: Workers' rights protected

:: Keeping the European Arrest Warrant

:: A special status in Europe - and

:: Stability for the UK.

Launching the card, Mr Cameron will say: "These guarantees - from safeguarding our economy to protecting our security - show the positive case for remaining inside the EU.

"Whenever Leave campaigners are asked what Britain will look like outside of the EU, all they can say is: 'We just don't know'."

But Vote Leave is hitting back with five guarantees of what it claims "In" looks like.

"If people vote to stay, they are voting for the free movement of people from Europe to the UK, permanently," says chief executive Matthew Elliott.

"This will get worse when Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey join the EU. British business will continue to be strangled by EU regulation and we will continue to send £50m each week to Brussels.

"If we Vote Leave on 23 June, we take back control of our money, our borders and our democracy. That's the safer option for our future."

For Mr Cameron, who has already visited the Beatles' Abbey Road studios with Labour's Tessa Jowell and a supermarket with Harriet Harman, campaigning with Mr Khan is another attempt to woo Labour voters.

The Tory Chancellor, George Osborne, has even appeared alongside his former Labour rival Ed Balls, who Mr Cameron once called the most annoying person in modern politics.
