Poldark actor Richard Harrington swapped the glamour of TV for a job delivering takeaways during the COVID-19 lockdown, having done "nothing" for six months.

The 45-year-old star told the BBC he got on his bike and worked as a Deliveroo rider, saying he was "grateful" to have the opportunity to ride every day.

He confessed that he had been idle between March and September last year, with movie and TV productions shut down due to the effects of the virus.

"I'm normally quite a fit person," he said. "But the lockdown had turned me into a lock-in, so I was thankful I was able to go on my bike every day because of the job."

Harrington is known for portraying the recurring role of Captain Andrew Blamey in the first three series of Poldark — husband of Ross Poldark's cousin, Verity.

The star has also appeared in numerous period dramas, including the episode of The Crown's third series which focused on the Aberfan coal disaster.

Last year, he showed up as Mal in several episodes of the brutal Sky drama Gangs of London.

His latest project is the thriller Fflam (Flame) for Welsh-language broadcaster S4C, which tells the story of a widow who begins to believe that her late husband is not dead after all.

Harrington said the subject of grief is one he has an interest in, confessing that he had a "complete breakdown" after the death of his mother in 2014.

He said: "I threw myself into work, I threw myself into running, I threw myself into the well-being of my children.

"But looking back I wasn't very kind to myself, I didn't give myself much room to think properly."

Fflam is currently airing on S4C, with six episodes in total due to air.
