Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo: Have We Found Our Forever Car?

From Esquire

The original Porsche Taycan launched with a bang (inaudible, of course) in those halcyon pre-face mask days of 2019.

And what a car it proved to be. Porsche had entered the electric scene with a model that set a new benchmark for EVs; performance, style and a level of new-gen engineering that exceeded already lofty expectations.

Amidst all the city superminis and SUVs being announced, here was an electric car to get excited about; giving us all hope for what the EV era would bring.

Well now, less than eighteen months on, we have the first addition to the Taycan’s range, the Cross Turismo. It could be a life stage thing, but we think we like it even more.

The shooting brake-cum-estate boot line is familiar from the Panamera Sport Tursimo – Porsche calls it a “flyline” – and the added space means 47mm more headroom in the back and a very handy 1,200 litres of boot space. (Apologies, but we hit the age when storage got us excited long ago.)

Design-wise, the Taycan’s almost Lego-like panelling seems more pronounced on this version – definitely a good thing – while additional off-road detailing like wheel arch trims, front and rear lower aprons and side sills accentuate a more rugged, practical and battle-hardened look and feel.

Porsche is certainly going all-out with the outdoors potential in this model. In fact, we're surprised it doesn't come with a bandana and free tickets to the X-Games.

It offers 20mm of extra ground clearance for off-roading your way to the beach, the Taycan’s all-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension come as standard too for extra control, and the “gravel” mode setting adapts the chassis, traction and throttle settings should the dust really start to fly.

There’s an Off-Road design pack option on top of this which ups the dirt-track ante even more, while a custom-built rear carrier will hold up to three bikes.

And conveniently Porsche can even provide these for you, having produced the eBike Cross (£7,500) and the eBike Sport (£9,500) with Studio FA Porsche and Shimano.

There are four variations to choose from, starting with the entry-level Taycan 4 Cross Turismo (0-62 mph in 5.1 seconds, top speed 137 mph, range up to 283 miles, £79,340), all the way up to the flagship Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo which can manage a neck-bracing 0-62 mph in 2.9 seconds (top speed 155 mph, range up to 260 miles, £139,910).

Porsche is already off to a fast start in the EV production stakes. The German marque reports that in 2020, one in three of all vehicles sold had an electric or hybrid powertrain.

The Taycan Cross Turismo, which goes on sale from today, can only help its target to make this one in two by 2025.

Let's just take a moment to recap for a second; supercar performance, legitimate eco-credentials, distinctive looks, off-roading skills and plenty of space for a Homebase trip?

This might just be the car we’d like to settle down with.
