Other options for your money

If you haven't won a prize for a while (or ever), did you know that some current accounts are paying up to 5% interest? Nationwide's FlexDirect pays 5% on up to £2,500 for a year, providing you pay in £1,000 a month. Meanwhile, Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank pay 4% on up to £3,000 until March next year. Again, you just need to pay in £1,000 a month.

And the Santander 123 account pays 3% on balances between £3,000 and £20,000. You have to set up at least two direct debits, pay in at least £500 a month and pay a monthly account fee of £2 to qualify. The account does, however, pay cashback on direct debits, so you can earn that £2 back very quickly.
