Probe Into 'Honour Killing' Of British Woman

Pakistan has ordered an urgent investigation into the death of a British woman following a claim it was a so-called "honour killing".

Samia Shahid, who was 28 and from Bradford, died last week while visiting her family in Pakistan's Punjab province.

The cause of death has not yet been established.

Her husband, Mukhtar Kazim, has claimed she was killed for marrying against her family's wishes.

Ms Shahid's father and one of her cousins have been arrested and are being questioned for making conflicting statements.

Police are searching for her first husband.

Mujahid Akbar, the district police chief, said: "Nothing can be ruled out. It can be a case of honour killing, but right now we are waiting for reports of medical tests done on her body."

Bradford West Labour MP Naz Shah is pressing for Ms Shahid's death to be fully investigated.

She has written to the prime minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, calling for her body to be exhumed.

"I'm not going to rest until I'm satisfied I know the cause of her death - we need to investigate it fully," she said.

The authorities were notified of the death by Mrs Shahid's parents on 20 July.

Police spokeswoman Nabila Ghazanfar said: "The parents of Samia Shahid at the time told police they saw some fluid coming out from her mouth and that she was found dead in her room."

Police are trying to track down Shahid's first husband, who is also her cousin.

Mr Kazim told police his wife angered her family by divorcing her cousin two years ago to marry him.

The country's Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has requested a swift investigation.

The case came to light less than two weeks after social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch was strangled by her brother for posting racy photos that were deemed shameful in conservative Pakistan.
