Christmas Day is almost here – and, as festive cheer fill the air, it seems many of us are rushing to the local supermarket to panic-buy overlooked items.

The Co-op has revealed its top 10 predictions for last minute Christmas Eve sales ahead of the big day tomorrow.

It seems many of us have prepared for Christmas lunch or dinner ahead of time – buying their ingredients in advance instead or buying them online – as traditional items like turkey, potatoes, sprouts and mince pies don’t get a look in on this list.

However, in many cases, people have forgotten to buy their festive breakfasts in advance – with baguettes, milk, croissants and white bread one of the most popular buys.

Everyone’s also stocking up on extra booze, with prosecco the fourth most purchased item – while soft drinks seem even more popular still, with Coke coming in at third place.

Top 10 last minute Christmas Eve sales

  1. Milk

  2. Lemons

  3. Coke

  4. Prosecco

  5. Baguette

  6. Chocolate boxes

  7. Carrots

  8. Croissants

  9. Cucumber

  10. White bread

Chris Whitfield, Retail Chief Operating Officer from Co-op said in a statement: “Prosecco has become the nation’s favourite drink to toast celebrations and this Christmas Eve it will outsell bread but milk will be the item everyone dashes out to get to ensure that the Christmas Day cuppa can be enjoyed.

“We expect to see 50 per cent uplift in prosecco sales compared last year, while lemons will be a top item people need to stock up on. It’s an extremely busy time and we can all relate to forgetting to pick up the tin foil or making one final trip to the shops to buy extra chocolate goodies.”
