PS5: Here's what to expect ahead of tonight's launch event

Sony will be launching the PlayStation 5 (PS5) in an online event tonight ahead of its release later this year.

The event will be streamed on Twitch and YouTube at 9pm UK time, and was initially postponed out of respect for the Black Lives Matter protests taking place across the world.

Tonight's event will offer gamers their first glimpse of the PS5 console as well as a look at the first tranche of unique games which will be available on it.

Some of the first few PS5 games have already been announced, including Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, Fortnite and Destiny 2, but in general the contents of the show have been kept secret.

Sony has already released the console's specifications which are a dramatic improvement on the PS4 which launched six years ago, although the design remains a mystery.

It will be almost completely backwards-compatible, and the console's 4K UHD blu-ray drive should make it great for watching films as well as playing games.

Rumours suggest some of the new games to be announced tonight will include a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, another Call of Duty game, and - more of a prayer than a rumour - some more news about Cyberpunk 2077.

It is expected to be released before the end of 2020, likely towards Christmas, and will be competing directly with Microsoft's new Xbox Series X console.

Unlike Sony with the PS5, Microsoft has been quick to release all the information it can about its new console.

For Sony, the only confirmed bit of hardware design has been the new DualSense controller, which was revealed on 7 April.

Sony says the design has been finalised for the wireless controller and units have been sent to games developers "who are implementing its unique features into their games" - but it won't be announcing what those games will be for a few hours yet.
