She was praised for her kind, grandmotherly instincts by Meghan Markle during her interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this week.

Now, the Queen has paid a Mother's Day tribute to "all mums" with a sweet photo shared to her official Instagram account.

The 94-year-old can be seen in the throwback black and white image as a child smiling while standing beside the late Queen Mother.

The caption to the post reads: "To all Mums everywhere, we wish you a very special Mother’s Day. #MotheringSunday."

The Queen Mother, born Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, passed away in 2002 aged 101.

It is unclear when the image was taken, but it was likely more than a decade before Her Majesty was crowned, aged 27, upon the death of her father King George VI in 1952.

The sweet post resonated with royal fans who left more than 80,000 'likes' and over 500 messages of support – at a time when her 99-year-old husband, Prince Philip, remains in hospital.

It comes almost a week after the Duchess of Sussex opened about how the monarch had reminded her of her own grandmother during one of her first engagements shortly after she married Prince Harry.

The duchess – who is pregnant with her second child – recalled: "We were in the car going between engagements, and she has a blanket that sits across knees for warmth, and it was chilly.

"She was like, 'Meghan, come on.' And she put it over my knees as well."

Meghan added: "It made me think of my grandmother. She's always been warm and inviting and welcoming."

In the same interview, filmed near the duke and duchess' new California home, the former actress also revealed how the Queen had given her a thoughtful gift before their first outing together.

The pair visited Chester in 2019, soon after the royal wedding, and ahead of the trip the newlywed received "some beautiful pearl earrings and a matching necklace".

Similarly, the duchess recalled the unexpected occasion she first met the Queen during a lunch at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, where Prince Andrew and his former wife, the Duchess of York, live.

She explained how she learnt how to curtsey moments before the monarch arrived.
