The Queen wore a stunning diamond brooch in the shape of a Canadian maple leaf during a video call with the newly appointed Governor General of Canada, Ms. Mary Simon.

The brooch was originally owned by the late Queen Mother, who received it as a gift from her husband and the Queen’s father, King George VI. The brooch was was later passed down to the Queen.

Her Majesty often wears the brooch on official visits or during events involving Canada in subtle tribute to the nation, as the maple leaf is its national emblem.

In the past the Queen has also loaned the brooch to the Duchess of Cambridge, who wore the heirloom jewellery piece during her first official visit to Canada.

The Queen wore the diamond maple leaf on the shoulder of her floral lilac and green dress, during a call with Canada's Ms Mary Simon, with a double string necklace of pearls.

A caption alongside the video explained that, “Ms. Simon, who spoke to Her Majesty from Rideau Hall in Ottawa, is the 13th Governor General of Canada to be appointed during Her Majesty’s 69 year reign.”

It added that the role of the Governor General of Canada is to act as, “Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces and [it] has a unifying role, bringing Canadians together to support each other and work towards a better Canada.”
