Pubs, bars and clubs across England and Wales will be allowed to stay open for longer to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee during the Bank Holiday weekend.

Queen Elizabeth II, who celebrated her 96th birthday in April, became the first British monarch to reach the milestone after celebrating the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne on 6 February 2022.

The licensing extension will cover Thursday 2 June to Saturday 4 June.

During the period, pubs in England and Wales will be be allowed to stay open for an extra two hours until 1am. Normal opening and closing hours will resume on Sunday 5 June.

This jubilee is the Queen's first without her husband of 73 years, the Duke of Edinburgh, who died last year.

Brits have also been given an extra Bank Holiday to commemorate the occasion. National celebrations will be staged over the four-day bank holiday weekend.

Thousands of events will take place across the country to mark the Queen’s record-breaking service on the throne including a Trooping the Colour, a pageant and a Service of Thanksgiving.

Organisers estimate that around 10 million people will attend street parties throughout the country, including the Platinum Party at the Palace pop concert at Buckingham Palace.

In Scotland, only pubs and bars in Glasgow will be allowed to pour drinks later than usual, with all licensed premises, except off-sales and casinos, given an additional hours’ opening time.

However, Edinburgh will not be offering the same extension and updates on local authority decisions are yet to be confirmed. Northern Ireland has not made any announcement on extended opening hours.

The move marks a boost for the UK's hospitality sector after restaurants, pubs, bars, clubs and entertainment venues including cinemas were forced to close for extended periods during the pandemic.

Parliament passed an order to approve the longer licensing hours under Section 172 of the Licensing Act 2003 on 25 April.
