Report: Jets' third-overall pick Quinnen Williams arrested after trying to board flight with gun
New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, was arrested Thursday night after attempting to board a flight at LaGuardia Airport with a gun, according to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes.
At issue is Williams’ permit for the gun, which was reportedly valid for Alabama. Williams was reportedly arrested for criminal possession of a weapon by New York’s Port Authority Police Department.
Oh boy.
At approximately 9:15pm, #Jets DE Quinnen Williams was trying to board his flight at LaGuardia Airport when he was arrested for Criminal Possession of a Weapon (his permit is in Alabama). Williams posted 28 total tackles and 2.5 sacks in 13 games during his rookie season. On Friday morning, Williams’ agent tweeted out a statement from his attorney.
Statement from Quinnen Williams's attorney, Alex Spiro:
Mr. Williams respects and follows the law. There was allegedly a technical issue with the manner in which the lawfully owned firearm was stored - and we expect the matter to be resolved shortly.— Nicole Lynn (@AgentNicoleLynn) March 6, 2020
The 22-year-old was widely seen as an elite talent coming out of Alabama, and was drafted after Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa, respectively. That so-so production — not atypical for an interior defensive lineman — left Williams plenty to work on this offseason.
“This season’s like a learning experience,” Williams said after the season, via AL.com. “For all my things I did wrong, all the things I learned from my wrong and different things like that, I’m going to take this in the offseason and work on it. Come back next season and not do the same things I did my rookie year wrong again.”
