Radio 1 DJ Matt Edmondson has spoken about the rare mood disorder he is living with which makes him need to keep constantly busy.

Edmondson, 35, revealed that he suffers from cyclothymia, which could lead to bipolar disorder if it goes untreated.

He told The Sun on Sunday: “I need to be doing something at all times, but I have a condition called cyclothymia.

“I have these extreme episodes where I feel really productive and positive and then periods where I feel low and unmotivated – thankfully this is more rarely.”

Cyclothymia is a rare disorder affecting less than one per cent of the population, and its symptoms involve periods of low mood followed by highs where the person feels full of energy and as if they don’t need much sleep.

If it goes untreated with medicine or talking therapy, cyclothymia can develop into bipolar disorder which may have much greater effects on mood and behaviour.

Edmondson’s radio co-host King has recently got engaged to partner Stuart Broad.

She shared a photo of the couple kissing and a diamond ring on her finger at New Year, writing: “A thousand times yes! I still can’t believe it, the most magical start to the new year! I can’t wait to spend all my years with you @stuartbroad.”
