Singer BJ Thomas, best known for the hit 'Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head' has revealed that he has stage four lung cancer.

In a post shared on Twitter, Thomas, 78, shared that he had begun treatment for stage four lung cancer in a Texas healthcare facility and is “hopeful for a complete recovery.”

The five-time Grammy winner went on to thank his loved ones for their strength and support during this difficult time: "I just wanted to take this unique opportunity to share my gratitude to Gloria, my wonderful wife and my rock for over 53 years, my family, friends, and fans.

"I'm so blessed to have had the opportunity to record and perform beautiful songs in pop, country, and gospel music, and to share those wonderful songs and memories around the world with millions of you."

Fans have shown their support for Thomas on social media.

One wrote: "Wishing you a full recovery. Stay strong. You've got this!"

Another reminisced on the impact of Thomas' most notable hit when he was a young boy:

"Your song "Raindrops keep falling on my head" was my favorite song when I was 3 years old. May God bless you and your family."

Among his first hits were the 1966 cover of the Hank Williams song I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, and the 1968 song Hooked on a Feeling.

His biggest hit came in 1969 with Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head, written by Burt Bacharach, which went on to win an Oscar for Best Original Song. It also spent a whole month at the top of the Hot 100 in early 1970, and was nominated for a Grammy the same year.

The track was most notably featured in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and has also appeared more recently in Forrest Gump and Spider-Man 2.
