Rambus Partners With IBM for Development of Hybrid Memory

Rambus Inc. RMBS recently announced that it is developing hybrid memory systems in collaboration with International Business Machines IBM, primarily for use in future data centers.

The partnership is aimed at optimizing the capabilities of DRAM and other emerging memory systems that will address the increasing need for storage, given the exponential rise in data generation and related artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

Rambus is developing a prototype of the high capacity memory subsystem using IBM's POWER9 processor and OpenCAPI interface. Per the press release, Rambus became part of the “OpenCAPI Consortium, an open development community based on Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface technology, and OpenPOWER Foundation, an open development community based on the IBM Power Architecture.”

This flexible memory system will blend DRAM and other technologies namely, “Flash, enhanced Flash, Phase Change Memory (PCM), Resistive RAM (ReRAM) and Spin Torque Transfer Magnetic RAM (STT-MRAM).” This in turn will create memory with high capacity at a lower per bit cost. These high capacity and high density memories are anticipated to utilize the CPU to its full potential.

Rambus has been undertaking several initiatives for the efficient operation of data centers. The company delivers high-speed interfaces and related chips that increase the capability of cloud.

In October 2017, the company announced a host of “silicon-proven PHYs on 14nm LPP process technology.” The company also announced the interoperability of “Rambus DDR4 3200 PHY and Arm CoreLink Dynamic Memory Controller” meant for datacenters.

Per MarketsandMarkets, the data center solutions market is projected to touch $32.3 billion in 2020 from $18.56 billion in 2015 at a CAGR of 11.7%. We believe that Rambus, on account of its continuous efforts to enhance its data center related solutions, is well poised to benefit from this growth.
