You've heard of feng shui, the Chinese philosophy of placement that has influenced the position of buildings, the architecture of their design and the layout of their interiors.

A similar idea is popular with Indian buyers. Vastu shastra, thought to date back around 5,000 years, is based on traditional Hindu and a few Buddhist beliefs.

Translated as "the science of architecture", the practice influences the design, layout, measurements and space of a building. Key to this are the placement of the entrance, bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchen.

In an unusual move for the London property market, a luxury apartment on Pont Street, Knightsbridge, has been designed according to vastu shastra.

Caroline Takla, director of One Point Six, the developer behind the project, says: "While this isn't the first London home to incorporate the principles of vastu shastra it's certainly a rarity to find one at this level in such a prime location and in a traditional building that hasn't been built to incorporate vastu from the, outset."

In the year to July 2017, 22 per cent of the sales in prime central London went to Indian buyers, up from five per cent in 2012, according to Cluttons. Buying agency Black Brick said that Indian buyers accounted for 13 per cent of its sales last year, up from 2.6 per cent in 2016.

The three-bedroom lateral apartment is north-facing, with an entrance hall in the East 4 quadrant, said to bring prosperity and strengthen the social connections of the residents.

The flat is on the market for £4.75million with One Point Six (020 7493 9202; onepointsixlondon.com).
