There Are Reasons To Feel Uneasy About Anpario's (LON:ANP) Returns On Capital

What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Although, when we looked at Anpario (LON:ANP), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Anpario:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.081 = UK£3.6m ÷ (UK£49m - UK£4.7m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2022).

Therefore, Anpario has an ROCE of 8.1%. On its own, that's a low figure but it's around the 8.7% average generated by the Food industry.

Above you can see how the current ROCE for Anpario compares to its prior returns on capital, but there's only so much you can tell from the past. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free report on analyst forecasts for the company.

The Trend Of ROCE

On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Anpario doesn't inspire confidence. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 13%, but since then they've fallen to 8.1%. However it looks like Anpario might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments.

Our Take On Anpario's ROCE

To conclude, we've found that Anpario is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. Since the stock has declined 42% over the last five years, investors may not be too optimistic on this trend improving either. In any case, the stock doesn't have these traits of a multi-bagger discussed above, so if that's what you're looking for, we think you'd have more luck elsewhere.

On a final note, we've found 3 warning signs for Anpario that we think you should be aware of.
