“Shop Small” is a series where we speak to founders of small businesses discussing how their products and services address the needs of the members of the communities in which the founders identify.

Braid Better by Rebundle (@rebundle.co) is a plant-based braid line that’s better for the environment, better for your scalp, and looks absolutely gorgeous. The sustainable braids were created by Ciara Imani May, whose personal experience with synthetic braids led her to found the company, Rebundle.

While experiencing scalp irritation from braids, Ciara made a connection between the types of materials being used in the plastic, synthetic hair she was wearing and the irritation that she experienced. From there, she decided to figure out how she could continue wearing braids in a way that was also sustainable. After product testing, funding, and building a team, Braid Better by Rebundle was born!

“Now, Braid Better is the first US-made, plant-based braiding hair,” Ciara tells In The Know. “It’s made from banana fiber, it’s itch-free, it’s comfortable, and it’s doing exactly what I need it to do.” On top of being better for the environment, the braids come in a variety of lengths and colors to suit individuals’ tastes and preferences.

But Braid Better by Rebundle isn’t just sustainably sourced, the company also boasts a synthetic recycling program that allows people who might not necessarily be ready to make the switch to Braid Better’s plant-based products to at least dispose of their plastic, synthetic hair in a sustainable way. “It’s as simple as mailing it in to us so we can properly dispose of it,” says Ciara.

While creating a sustainable brand is a huge reward on its own, Ciara shares that the appreciation from her customers is one of the biggest benefits of Braid Better braids. “Often as Black women and consumers we go ignored or unnoticed. And in this space, this really is something that is really intimate and special to us and our customers are recognizing us for that; for building this out, for them and for all of us,” says the founder.

As for the future of Braid Better by Rebundle, Ciara says it’s all about reducing synthetic hair waste. “We see a future where we are able to significantly reduce those emissions and that plastic pollution, while also reducing the number of women who are exposed to toxic ingredients in personal care products.”
