Yahoo Finance Record-breaking West Ham season just the start, vows David Moyes
West Ham could move into the Premier League's top four with victory over Crystal Palace on Tuesday night, but David Moyes insists he is only getting started in east London.
During his second spell at the club, having kept the Hammers up for the second time, Moyes has been given what he always wanted the first time around: time.
Given his chance to build, Moyes has West Ham sitting on more points (32) than they've ever racked up at this stage in a Premier League season.
The Hammers boss has impressed in the recruitment department too with the additions of Tomas Soucek, Vladimir Coufal and Jarrod Bowen crucial to their turnaround in fortunes.
Moyes has a clear profile of the sort of player he wants to add and has improved those already available to him, but says he'll need two or three more windows for this to truly be his West Ham side, adding that this fantastic run is just the foundations of what he wants to achieve.
"To get growth at any football club you need to have the foundations down,"said Moyes. "I’ve started to get some foundations down. And we’ve started to see some bits of growth.
"But to get proper growth you’re going to need two, three, four transfer windows. It’s the changing of some players. Contracts and the time it takes for them to run out. For things to change. And to get in some people that you want.
"This is why you hear me talking about supporting managers. Like Frank [Lampard, who was sacked by Chelsea yesterday] for example. Frank’s brought in some players in the window who were expected to hit the ground running. It’s as if when you bring a player in he has to have the answer immediately or it doesn’t work.
"I was very fortunate at Everton. You get the feeling nowadays when you bring a player in he has to go straight in the team and be proved, or the manager’s not right. We’ll have to change with the world if that’s the case."
While Moyes has been impressive in the transfer market, he has made no secret of his desire to overhaul the scouting and recruitment department.
While progress is being made, Moyes says the Hammers must do better.
"We’ve not done well enough at it at all, but our recruitment at the moment has been good," he said. "It will be one of the big things if I am here longer that I will hope to change, to make it a better department.
"We are working very hard behind the scenes, myself and the scouts we’ve got, to analyse and pick up the best players we can. As it is, there’s very little scouting going on because nobody can go to the games. It’s more about watching videos."
