When you can't take The Rock to Rome, just bring Rome to The Rock. As the saying goes.

Dwayne Johnson's new movie Red Notice was all set to head to the Italian capital, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, plans had to be re-evaluated.

So instead of shooting at the famous Castel Sant'Angelo, the mausoleum of Roman emperor Hadrian – now a museum – the movie's production built one in Atlanta instead.

Taking to Facebook, The Rock paid tribute to the dedication of the production staff.

“For our globe trotting movie Red Notice we were all set to film at the famed museum Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, Italy,” he wrote.

“When the pandemic shut our world down - we regrouped, re-strategized and decided the show must go on. So we built the museum ourselves. Every last incredible detail - inside and out.

As producer, I’m extremely proud of our hungry and brilliant Production designer, Art directors, Construction teams. Set decorators.

“And ALL OF OUR CREW who accepted this daunting challenge during COVID of coming back to finish what we started. Hardest workers in the room who always finish the job.”

The movie, being made by Johnson's own Seven Bucks Productions and Netflix, is an action-comedy helmed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who directed Johnson in the movies Central Intelligence and Skyscraper.

This time around, Johnson plays an FBI profiler assigned to a 'red notice', the highest level of alert in the Interpol system.

The reason behind it is Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds, playing the world's greatest art thief and the world's greatest con man, respectively.

Doubtless, then, the Castel is to be the scene of a heist of some description.

Originally set for a June 2020 release, filming was abandoned in March this year, and wrapped just last week.

Ryan Reynolds has also paid tribute to the dedication of all those who worked on the movie.

A new release date is yet to be confirmed.
