SINGAPORE — Redevelopment works for The Float@Marina Bay are set to start in March 2022, after the announcement on Wednesday (15 July) that its design consultancy tender was awarded to the team led by WOHA Architects.

While the redevelopment is scheduled to be completed by end-2025, the project scope and timeline may be adjusted given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, said the Ministry of National Development (MND) and Ministry of Defence (Mindef) in a joint press statement.

WOHA Architects will act as the principal consultant, and will lead the project team to develop and implement the design for the redevelopment, after winning the tender held from 30 May 2019 to 11 July 2019.

It emerged from 25 submissions and five shortlisted teams, with the evaluation panel assessing that its design proposal had “best fulfilled the objectives of creating an exciting and accessible community space in the heart of the city, and responded appropriately to the context of Marina Bay with a compelling vision and narrative”.

Permanent venue for large-scale events

The Float@Marina Bay was officially opened in 2007 as a temporary venue for the National Day Parade (NDP) while the National Stadium was being redeveloped into the Singapore Sports Hub.

Even after the Sports Hub was officially opened in 2015, it remained a viable venue for the annual parade due to its attractive city skyline backdrop.

Plans for the redevelopment of The Float@Marina Bay were announced in 2017, envisioning a permanent venue to stage large-scale national and community events such as the National Day Parade, River Hongbao and the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown. It would also provide spaces within Marina Bay for the public to enjoy community and recreational activities.

According to the media statement, WOHA Architects’ design will leverage the site’s waterfront location to create a “distinctive, fit-for-purpose and flexible events venue” for different scales and types of events.

The development will feature various community sports facilities, such as a swimming pool and water sports centre, as well as a new public waterfront promenade that will form part of the continuous loop around Marina Bay.

Supporting food and beverages as well as retail offerings are also being considered. In addition, there will be a gallery with a National Service (NS) theme to acknowledge the contributions of national servicemen past and present.
