Just when we thought it was safe to start getting our nails done again at the end of 2020, another lockdown has left us with no access to our beloved nail technicians.

So, if you're left with nails that are growing out a rapid pace, you might be wondering how to remove your gel nails at home.

Gel nails are the one step in our beauty regime we always visit the salon for. Fake tanning at home? No problem. DIY facial? A piece of cake. Home wax kits? Pass them over. But gel nails? Not only are they notoriously difficult to get off via traditional nail polish removal methods without damaging the nail, but it's always been historically difficult to find suitable products to remove gel nails at home.

Luckily, Boots has come to the rescue, and provided us with a fuss-free, affordable gel nail remover to get a salon finish without leaving the house.

It's had rave reviews on the Boots website from people who've trialled the remover and found it a viable solution for when getting to a nail salon isn't an option.

One happy shopper exclaimed:

'I have been looking for a decent gel remover for months and finally I have found it!!! Removed all traces of gel with ease and didn’t leave nails feeling dry and brittle. Would highly recommend!!!'

Another vouched for the product as a returning customer:

'I only use this remover on all my clients. It's by far the best remover I've come across. Using the wrapping method, and in 10-15 mins the gel is easily removed with an orange stick/cuticle pusher. Only wish it came in a bigger bottle!!'

How do you remove gel nail polish at home?

If you're doing a DIY beauty hack usually reserved for the professionals, we advise using the same techniques as they would use too. We never recommend attempting to peel old gel polish from the nail, as this can cause it to break or become thin.

We've also detailed the foil method below, as this is more suited to people with dry or sensitive skin, due to minimal contact of the surrounding skin with the acetone.

1.Use a buffer or nail file to remove the fine, top layer of existing nail polish.

2.Soak squares of cotton wool in acetone and place on each nail.

3.Wrap each tip of the finger in foil to keep the cotton wool in place.

4.Keep the wraps on for about 5-20 minutes, depending on how old the polish is and what colour (darker, more stubborn colours often take longer to detach themselves).

5.Gently remove the loosened polish with a specialised scraper or cuticle stick.

6.If it’s still hard, place the nail back into the foil for a further two minutes, making sure the cotton wool pad is sitting on top of the nail and has adequate acetone

7.Once this is all done and all remnants of the polish have been removed, apply a generous dollop of cuticle oil to each nail to hydrate and restore the vulnerable nail bed and massage in.

8.Do the same with some thick, nourishing hand cream.

PRO TIP: Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before apply the cuticle oil and hand cream, to remove any lingering traces of acetone from your skin, which can be damaging.
