Report: Jets expected to fire Adam Gase following Week 17 game

The New York Jets are expected to fire Gase following the team’s Week 17 game against the New England Patriots, according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The news doesn’t exactly come as a surprise. In two seasons with the team, Gase has gone 9-22 and failed to lift the Jets’ offense despite his background as a coordinator on that side of the ball.

The Jets rank 31st in passing yards and 23rd in rushing yards in 2020. They’ve also scored just 24 offensive touchdowns, which is tied for last in the league. Last season, the Jets ranked 27th in passing yards and 31st in rushing. They scored 31 touchdowns in 2019, which ranked 26th.

Curiously, the Jets decided to make the move with the team on a winning streak. After losing their first 13 games of the season, the Jets have won two straight games. Those wins came at a price, however, as the Jets took themselves out of the No. 1 draft spot with last week’s win over the Cleveland Browns.

Who will Jets pursue to replace Adam Gase?

The Jets are expected to talk to a number of candidates once Gase is gone. Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy is reportedly among the big names the team will consider. Pelissero and Rapoport add Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley to that list. They also mention college coaches like Matt Campbell, Jim Harbaugh and Dan Mullen.

Whoever the team hires will have to make some significant decisions about the future of the franchise. The Jets are locked into the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Assuming Trevor Lawrence goes No. 1 to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the new Jets coach will have to determine whether the team should take a different quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick. Sam Darnold hasn’t flourished as an NFL starter, though plenty of offensive players have taken their game to another level after Gase no longer coaches them. That list includes Ryan Tannehill, Kenyan Drake, DeVante Parker and Mike Gesicki.

The next Jets coach will have to determine whether they see that same potential in Darnold.
