Patriots-Chiefs game moved to Monday night

·2-min read

The Week 4 game between the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs will now be played on Monday night, according to Diana Russini and Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The NFL confirmed the change.

That game, originally set for Sunday, was postponed on Saturday when players on the Patriots and Chiefs tested positive for COVID-19. Both teams confirmed that one person on each of their teams tested positive, but did not reveal any names.

Patriots quarterback Cam Newton was placed on the COVID-19/reserve list on Saturday and will miss Week 4, but that doesn’t mean he has tested positive. Players can be placed on the COVID-19/reserve list if they’ve simply been exposed to someone who has tested positive.

The Patriots-Chiefs game will be played at 7:05 pm ET. The Monday night game between the Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers will kick off just under two hours later.

No new positives

The Patriots and Chiefs playing on Monday will only happen pending the results of more COVID-19 tests on both teams. Thus far, tests on Patriots and Chiefs staff and players have come back negative.

That doesn’t mean that either team is out of the woods yet. COVID-19 can take 3-7 days to incubate, so players who were exposed several days ago might not test positive until Monday or even later. However, with these same-day tests coming back negative, the NFL appears to be confident enough to push forward with the rescheduled game on Monday.
