Report: Raptors interested in Kings center Richaun Holmes
The clock is ticking for the Toronto Raptors to make a move and turn this season around.
With only three days left until the trade deadline, The Athletic’s Shams Charania is reporting the Raptors have expressed interest in acquiring Sacramento Kings center Richaun Holmes in hopes of filling a position the team has been sorely lacking in this year.
Holmes, who will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, is averaging 13.9 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game while shooting 64.4 percent from the field, and an impressive 81.1 percent from the free-throw line. While the 27-year-old big man may not be a complete game-changer, he’s certainly a vast improvement over Aron Baynes, who has struggled since signing with the Raptors in the offseason and has failed to replicate last year’s productivity with the Phoenix Suns.
Losing Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol to free agency last summer left a massive void in the center position for the Raptors, and it’s no secret the team has struggled to find a cohesive fit while also being out-rebounded by double digits against the last three opponents.
After experimenting with Baynes and Chris Boucher in the starting lineup, coach Nick Nurse finally committed to the small-ball lineup by inserting Norman Powell in the starting five, while sliding Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby to the center and power forward spots to greater success, but the team is severely lacking any consistency from the bench aside from Boucher.
With trade speculation surrounding Powell and Kyle Lowry, the Raptors will have to make a decision about their future as the March 25 deadline is fast approaching.
