Report: Raptors re-sign Chris Boucher to 2-year, $13.5M deal
The Toronto Raptors have further secured the center position by re-signing free agent center Chris Boucher to a 2-year, $13.5-million contract, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
The second year of his deal is unguaranteed, according to Blake Murphy of The Athletic.
Boucher went undrafted in 2017, and joined the Raptors 905 in the G-League in 2018. From there, the Montreal native developed his skillset, won Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, before getting promoted to a third-string position with the Raptors last season. His playing time and performances were inconsistent, but Boucher had several strong flashes, most notably in the Raptors’ historic 30-point comeback against the Dallas Mavericks where he threw down the game-winning dunk.
The Raptors lost Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka to Los Angeles over the weekend, but have signed Boucher and added Aron Baynes to fill the center position next season. Boucher and Baynes are stopgap options as the Raptors take aim at free agency in 2021, and both have their own merits. Baynes is the more reliable shooter and post defender, while Boucher’s athleticism and length brings a change of pace to the game. The two should split minutes, although Baynes will likely start.
Nevertheless, this is a prime opportunity for Boucher to showcase his talents, as this will be the first time in his career where he will be given consistent playing time. The 27-year-old is getting his first contract above the league minimum, and the next step will be showing enough consistency to extend his career.
Boucher averaged 6.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and a block in 13 minutes per game last season.
