NBA trade deadline: Raptors deal Matt Thomas to Jazz for future second-round draft pick

The Toronto Raptors have traded sharpshooter Matt Thomas to the Utah Jazz, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. In return, the Raptors will reportedly receive a future second-round draft pick from the Jazz.

The motive for this trade seems to be to clear out a roster spot in anticipation of Kyle Lowry being traded for a package involving multiple players. The Raptors are said to be in talks with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat with less than an hour to go before the trade deadline.

Thomas showed flashes as a rookie, most notably with a 17-point quarter against Indiana last season, but has failed to crack the rotation even with the Raptors struggling this season. Thomas is a career 46 percent shooter from three and is nearly automatic when left open, but so far has been entirely one-dimensional and unable to create his own shot while also being undersized on defense. That being said, his fit on Utah may be better than it was on the Raptors, as the Jazz have credible rim protectors to make up for his shortcomings, but it's still unlikely that Thomas will make the rotation.

The deal comes shortly after Wojnarowski reported the Raptors traded shooting guard Norman Powell to the Portland Trail Blazers for Gary Trent Jr. and Rodney Hood.

Thomas averaged 4.1 points in 67 career appearances for the Raptors after being signed from the Euroleague.
