Yahoo Finance Reports: Jason Garrett interviewing for Giants offensive coordinator opening
Jason Garrett may not be gone long from the NFL.
NFL Network and ESPN both report that the former Dallas Cowboys head coach is interviewing with the New York Giants on Wednesday for their offensive coordinator opening.
The Giants hired former New England Patriots assistant Joe Judge last week to replace fired coach Pat Shurmur. Meanwhile, the Cowboys replaced Garrett with former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy after he spent 10 years as the Dallas head coach.
Garrett’s credentials
Garrett was the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys for three seasons before taking over as head coach midway through the 2010 season. He last called plays for the Cowboys in 2012, according to NFL Network.
He spent 12 seasons as a backup quarterback in the NFL, spending 2000-03 with the Giants after a seven-year stint with the Cowboys.
Garrett, 53, is considerably more experienced than 38-year-old Judge, which could explain part of his potential appeal to general manager Dave Gettleman, who preaches fundamentals and old-school football.
Mara gave approval for Garrett
Co-owner John Mara spoke well of Garrett during Judge’s introductory news conference when asked about the prospect of him joining the coaching staff.
“I certainly wouldn't have any objection to that,” Mara said. “I have a lot of respect for Jason. At the end of the day, that's going to be Joe's decision.”
The Giants have also reportedly interviewed former Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens and veteran NFL offensive coordinator Mike Shula — who spent the last two seasons running the Giants offense — for positions on the coaching staff.
