Yahoo Finance Revamp of historic movie venue Twickenham Studios gets planning go-ahead
Plans for a multi-million pound revamp and expansion of the historic Twickenham Studios are to go ahead after the ambitious scheme received planning approval.
Twickenham won Oscars for sound mixing on Bohemian Rhapsody and a BAFTA for mixing on Sam Mendes’ 1917.
Now it is pressing the button on a redevelopment that will include a new TV studio, cutting edge sound production studios, flexible offices for local creative businesses, a café and boutique cinema.
The move is set to create 60 new jobs and bring £2.5 million per year in spending to the local economy.
A pair of TV production tycoons - Inbetweeners producer Piers Read and Merman production group partner Jeremy Rainbird - took over the running of the studios last year.
Earlier this year their company, The Creative District Improvement Company unveiled plans for the development. It is being carried out in partnership with property developer General Projects and finance from the British Airways Pension Fund.
The CDIC is also working on film studio developments in Liverpool, Birmingham and Ashford in Kent. They are aiming to create 5,000 jobs and a million square feet of production space by 2024.
The projects come as streaming giants including Netflix and Amazon look for more production space in the UK.

“We are putting in motion our vision to take this much loved heritage site and bringing it into a new era as the very best in class; creating a tech and innovation hub in London, whilst using sustainable architectural designs across the campus."
General Projects CEO, Jacob Loftus, said: "Working on a project like Twickenham Film Studios is truly exciting."
The architects are Hollaway Studio.
