Revamping your kitchen? Here's how to get started

6 tips to help you moodboard your dream kitchenBespoke kitchen, starting at £50,000, Plain English

If you're thinking about renovating and re-styling your kitchen, then I can imagine you're considering all sorts of things, from what colour palette and materials to go for, to whether you can afford the real Caesarstone worktop or need to opt for the more attractively priced IKEA version...

These are all big decisions and you don't want to waste money by making mistakes! That's why it's important to create a moodboard at the beginning of your project where you can focus all your thoughts in one space. It's so easy to be led astray when you're spending hour after hour on Pinterest and finding yourself stuck in an envy-inducing rabbit-hole of trendy images.

1. THINK ABOUT WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY

You're probably going to be spending a lot of your time in the kitchen, so it's important to make decisions that will create a space that will make you happy. Don't just style it according to the latest look or 'colour of the year' on social media. Be sure you pick a shade that lifts your spirits when you see it.

2. ARE YOU SURE YOU REALLY WANT A WHITE KITCHEN?

You might think it's better for the re-sale value of your house. However, when you do come to sell your home down the track, the majority of potential buyers will be thinking about putting in a new kitchen or having the old one re-sprayed when they move in. But it's your kitchen, so make the colour choice because it's what you want at this moment.

3. FINALISE YOUR FAVOURITE HUES

Create a palette of three shades. Once you've decided on your key colour, look on the colour chart and choose the same colour but a few tones lighter and use that as the secondary choice. Then look at them on the colour wheel and select a third one that you find pleasing alongside the other two.

4. CONSIDER YOUR SURFACE TEXTURE

What do you love? Do you lean towards the rustic effect of wood, or a more industrial concrete or stainless steel... Now you’ve got your palette of three colours and a surface texture, you can start shopping and bringing together your ideas.

5. GET ORGANISED ONLINE

As well as online tools that help you plan out your space, you can also organise your images online. Pinterest provides acres of inspiration, enabling you to create separate boards for different subjects, but there are lots of moodboard design options. I use Canva, but you can use any programmes you have to pull your visuals together.

6. TIME TO DOWNLOAD

Now add your digital moodboard to your phone and keep it as a reference when you're ready to shop. This will make it easier to stick to your scheme.
