This summer may be the perfect time for Brits to shake up their careers as job advertisements and salaries are up 4% across the UK, new research shows.
A survey of 1,200 British professionals by job board CV-Library has revealed now's a great time for candidates to kick-start their job search, as newly advertised job vacancies have risen steadily.
And analysis of this job market data has revealed the top 10 cities that saw the biggest jump in job vacancies, making them the best places for securing a new job right now.
Three out of four capital cities made the list, with job advertisements up 15% in Cardiff, 9% in Edinburgh and 6% in London.
However, Glasgow is the prime location for job-seeking Brits, with vacancies shooting up by more than a fifth (22%) from last month.
Coming in second with 18% more jobs on offer is Bristol, while Hull, where they shot up by 16%, steals third.
Portsmouth also saw an impressive jump of 11%, while Southampton (4%), Brighton (3%) and Manchester (2%) saw smaller, but still significant, increases.
Lee Biggins, CEO of CV-Library, said: “It seems Brits have got a fantastic few months ahead – and not just because the weather is heating up.
“While many of us assume that the job market quietens down in the summer months, this could actually be the best time to start your job search.
He added: “What’s more, with our data showing that the job market is continuing to grow year-on-year, Britain has proven itself to be resilient to complete political upheaval. So, there’s nothing to stop you from setting yourself up with a new job that will allow you to enjoy those longer summer evenings!”
The data shows these increases in job vacancies and salary offerings have led to a surge in candidate applications.
May’s bank holidays and the school half-term haven’t stopped the UK’s professionals from making a start on their job hunt either. In fact, applications to new jobs saw the most substantial rise, increasing by 9.3% year-on-year.
The top three cities with the highest rises in applications were Bristol (28%), London (15%) and Leicester (26.1%).
“If you want to stand a chance of securing your dream role, I’d recommend looking into what skills are most desirable in your field right now,” said Biggins.
“Investing in yourself is a sure-fire way to ensure that you’ll be head and shoulders above your competition. Plus, this will give you more leverage to negotiate for that higher salary.”
