It has begun. While Europe has been obsessing over elections in France and Britain, and officials in Brussels are haggling in back rooms over who gets the top jobs in the EU, something far more important has been happening. A full-scale trade war has started with China.

Boeing set to buy back supplier Spirit Aero: sources
STORY: Boeing is closing in on a deal to buy back Spirit AeroSystems - a former subsidiary that plays a big role in making its jets. The U.S. aerospace giant wants to take it back as part of moves to improve quality control. The firm has been in the spotlight since a midair blowout on one of its 737 MAX jets revived concerns over the safety of its jets. Reaching agreement with arch-rival Airbus had been the big problem. The European company didn’t want Boeing owning factories that make major parts for some of its latest aircraft.However, sources say talks have made “good progress”, with a deal now seen possible before Airbus posts mid-year earnings in July. That could see it take control of key plants in North Carolina and Northern Ireland. Boeing spun off Spirit back in 2005. Now the exact timing of a buyback deal is unclear, though the sources said it could come within weeks. Besides the quality concerns, Boeing has also become worried about Spirit’s financial condition. It posted a net loss of $617 million in the first quarter, and burned through $444 million in cash - far more than analysts expected. There was no comment from Boeing on the latest reports, while Airbus would only say that discussions were taking place.

Ferrari says new plant will boost flexibility, shorten car development times
Ferrari will use its new production site to boost manufacturing flexibility and shorten the time needed to develop and roll out new models, rather than to increase output, the CEO of the Italian luxury sports carmaker said on Friday. Ferrari's so called e-building in its home town of Maranello, northern Italy, for which it has invested around 200 million euros ($214 million), will also produce its first fully electric (EV) car, expected to be launched at the end of next year. "This building will allow us to shorten time to market or product development time," CEO Benedetto Vigna said at the plant's inauguration, adding these two activities sometimes currently overlap on existing assembly lines.

HPE-Nvidia partnership will make AI enterprise history: CEO
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced a new partnership with chip giant Nvidia (NVDA) at its HPE Discover 2024 event in Las Vegas this week, where the former unveiled its "Nvidia AI Computing by HPE" portfolio of AI products. Among these new offerings is the HPE Private Cloud AI. HPE CEO Antonio Neri joins Yahoo Finance's Josh Lipton and Yasmin Khorram "And the core of that, we really focus on the enterprise segment of the market, because when you think about AI, there is the model builders and the hyperscalers, you have the sovereign clouds, and the enterprise," Neri says. "Obviously, we've already seen tremendous traction on the model builder side and the hyperscalers, but we focus on enterprise. And at the core of that is how we deliver a simple AI solution to consume on-premises." Neri was joined onstage by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang to announce this partnership at Neri's keynote address on Tuesday, June 18. Neri foresees the partnership to "accelerate that adoption" of HPE's enterprise services. Many consumers are still hesitant to engage with AI, which Neri assures he has greatly considered "the human focus" and concern about data security: "And so the point is that we built all of those guardrails into the offer itself. And we believe this is going to help customers feel more comfortable around this. But ultimately is the data-first approach. And we need to make sure that we protect our data." Neri also touches upon Hewlett Packard Enterprise's AI servers and what sets them apart from the rest of the industry. Europe has clocked a record number of hours of negative power prices this year due to a mismatch between demand and supply as solar power generation soars, potentially helping to shift investment to much needed storage solutions. Wholesale power markets in most of Europe's key economies turned out zero or negative prices for a record number of hours in the first five months of this year at times of low demand. Drinks maker Britvic rejects $3.93 billion takeover proposal from Carlsberg
Shares in London-listed Britvic, which sells cocktail mixers and other non-alcoholic drinks, jumped 14% to 1,153 pence, while Carlsberg's stock fell about 8%. Carlsberg is looking to expand its focus on categories including cider, hard lemonade, hard seltzers, and ready-to-drink cocktails as it sees rising consumer interest in beverages outside the traditional beer category. "Britvic will be a major takeover, and at the same time, such a large takeover could have implications for their dividend and share buyback capacity," Nordnet analyst Per Hansen said, commenting on why Carlsberg's shares were down.
