‘RHOP’ star Candiace Dillard Bassett reacts to cheating rumors about co-star's husband: 'They are untrue'

Candiace Dillard Bassett was ready for a fresh start going into the upcoming sixth season of The Real Housewives of Potomac — and it seems the rest of her co-stars were, as well.

Season 5 put Candiace at the center of the drama, with her explosive feud with Monique Samuels turning physical, dividing the cast and the audience alike and resulting in charges being filed between both of the women, all of which were dismissed. With Monique leaving the show at the end of the season, season 6 offered Candiace an opportunity for a clean slate.

For the latest episode of In The Know’s pop culture interview series, We Should Talk, Candiace Dillard Bassett opened up about moving on from last season’s drama and focusing her energy on her burgeoning music career. She also discussed her drama with newbie Mia Thornton, not believing those infidelity rumors about Wendy Osefo’s husband, what’s going on between Gizelle and Jamal Bryant, and much more.

“It can be triggering just to go back into a space that, when you came out of that space, you were disheveled — emotionally disheveled. I had a little bit of apprehension,” Candiace told In The Know about starting filming for season 6. “It was a lot of unknowns: What was gonna happen? How would people respond? What’s the group’s morale? The life was sucked out of the group, and the morale of the group was just damaged. I felt like, in a little bit of a way, I had a responsibility to help repair that. I had a lot of feelings, and it was a lot of positive and a lot of negative, but I think that when you get rid of negativity, it makes it easy to move forward. We all — the cast that you will see in season 6 — we all wanted to move forward, and we all wanted to repair and heal.”

Candiace Dillard Bassett on her headspace coming out of season 5 of RHOP: “I was in a couple of places. For sure, I was still coming off of being really depressed and having a lot of anxiety about just not being able to control a narrative that was clearly malarky. It was clearly just a lot of craziness. I had a lot of really good talks with some of the girls. I had really great talks with the network; they were very supportive of me. They really made sure that I was okay, and they wanted to make sure that I was okay. All that aside, though, it can be triggering just to go back into a space that, when you came out of that space, you were disheveled — emotionally disheveled. I had a little bit of apprehension, and a little bit of… the unknown is very frightening for humans [and] for people in general. It was a lot of unknowns: What was gonna happen? How would people respond? What’s [the morale of the group as a whole?] The life was sucked out of the group, and the morale of the group was just damaged. I felt like, in a little bit of a way, I had a responsibility to help repair that. I had a lot of feelings, and it was a lot of positive and a lot of negative, but I think that when you get rid of negativity, it makes it easy to move forward. We all — the cast that you will see in season 6 — we all wanted to move forward, and we all wanted to repair and heal.”

Candiace Dillard Bassett on the rumors of infidelity about Wendy Osefo’s husband, Eddie, that come up this season: “Ashley kind of comes in and sweeps in and drops this bomb and then leaves. So, I was like, ‘What just happened here?’ I don’t want to give it away, but the rumor seems to be coming from the direction of Ashley and Gizelle. I don’t know if Wendy knew about it beforehand. I had not heard about this rumor, but Wendy was very angry. What you see when she was sitting there on that couch, and she’s like, ‘What you’re not gonna do is…’ We were all there looking like, ‘What is going on here?’ Nobody knew what was happening. That was intense. A lot of heated words were exchanged in those moments, and it was a lot. I was p*****! This was supposed to be fun girl time, and here comes Ashley and her forehead dropping bombs and starting some mess. […] I got really upset, and I think they will probably cut it out because I got really upset. I was triggered. People talk or joke all the time about being triggered about some things, but the conversation that was being had where Wendy was admonishing Gizelle triggered me because I remember how I felt hearing things and reading things that were just totally untrue. And here we’re talking about a blog on our show that is trying to ruin a family. By the way, the Osefo rumors, I believe, are untrue. They are untrue if you ask me.”

Candiace Dillard Bassett on new Housewife, Mia Thornton: “Having our new ‘Wife, Mia, definitely helped. Mia is a ball of energy, she’s fresh air, and she’s really sweet. She kinda starts out really rocky — like, incredibly rocky… with almost everybody. I was lookin’ like, ‘What in the what is happening in here?’ She came in scorching! Yes. It was really funny to see. I was there for some stuff, and then I heard about other things. It’s like putting all the pieces together to be like, ‘What is going on? She said what to who and why and huh?’ Her life is such a storybook-like a Lifetime movie! She doesn’t look like what she’s been through at all, so to see her be standing firm in who she is and being confident. You’ll get to see her story play out.”

Candiace Dillard Bassett on what leads to Mia and her throwing salad at one another this season: “Oh, my gosh. It was over the river and through the woods. It was like a journey. We started out cool, then it was great, and then it was like, ‘wait, what?’ and then it was like ‘huh?’ and then it was like, ‘salad!’ You almost don’t even know how it happens. It didn’t happen quickly. It was very much so like a journey of communication and miscommunication. Mia had to find her place and find her way and learn that everybody here is successful, everyone here has had at one point something to prove, and you don’t gotta do all that, girl. We’re gonna get to know you! Your turn is coming. Simmer down. And she got there, but there was salad before that. Undressed salad! It was dry salad. We were having lunch and, you know, now we’re throwing food in somebody’s house.”

Candiace Dillard Bassett on Gizelle Bryant’s relationship with ex-husband Jamal: “It’s not the easiest to be a friend to Gizelle in that way, because she can be a little closed off. The world could be on fire, and everything could be crumbling around her, and she’s gonna be like, ‘It’s fine!’ We kind of went through that a little bit, where it was clear that there was a little bit of trouble in paradise, and as a friend, I’m gonna come to you one-on-one personally and say, ‘Hey, are you good? Are you okay? What’s happening?’ At first, she was kind of giving me the Heisman — not in a negative way, but more like, ‘Yeah, we’re fine. We’re probably going to take a break.’ Then I was like, ‘A break? Why? This is the perfect time to be bumping in the sheets! You’re in quarantine. You can’t go anywhere. You might as well lay with the people you know!’ It was weird that she was, at first, guarded and also just giving very light tidbits about what was going on. Then, eventually, she did share that they had broken up. But it’s weird because they’re friends. […] He comes up to visit all the time to see the girls. […] They seem to be doing whatever, and it seems to be working.”
