Rob Brydon says Gavin & Stacey movie "would be a mistake"

Gavin & Stacey cast member Rob Brydon is not in favour of James Corden and Ruth Jones spinning off the show into a movie.

The duo reunited the cast for a 2019 Christmas special with a cliffhanger just begging for a follow-up, so there has naturally been speculation that a feature film could be the next step.

Brydon, who plays Uncle Bryn in the BBC comedy, isn't in favour of the film pitch. In a recent chat with Digital Spy, he explained why Gavin & Stacey should always remain on the small screen.

"I don't think they should do that," he told us. "I think that would be a mistake. It's not a film. It's not a cinema thing. It is what it is, and I don't hold film over television."

The actor went on: "There's sometimes an assumption that if it were to become a film it would somehow be elevating itself, and I think that's a misnomer. I think that's a mistake. I think that maybe, if James and Ruth decided to make another special, that would be wonderful, but I don't at all buy into this idea that a film of a TV show is somehow elevating it and taking it to another level. I just don't see that myself."

Whether Gavin & Stacey returns as a film, another BBC special or a full series of new episodes, there is likely to be a significant wait.

Jones recently admitted to the Capital Breakfast radio show that there's no telling yet when she'll get a chance to work again with Corden.

"Who knows? It took us 10 years to come back. It might take us another 10 if we come back," she said.

In the meantime, Gavin & Stacey is available for catch-up viewing on the iPlayer now.
