A knife-wielding robber who stormed a Birmingham supermarket is being mocked online for wearing a bizarre disguise that left him looking like Jim Carrey's The Mask.

West Midlands Police are hunting for the suspect who stole a quantity of cash from the Quinton Premier Supermarket in the Woodgate area of Birmingham on December 17.

The force shared an appeal earlier this week with CCTV images which captured the man threatening a worker in a full skin tight face mask.

The man can be seen wearing a grey tracksuit and material over his head with just holes for his eyes and one for his mouth.

Social media users were quick to ridicule the suspect for resembling the comedy superhero character from the 1994 movie The Mask, starring Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz.

Some said the unusual headgear left him looking like the Blue Power Ranger while others suggested he was wearing a gimp mask.

Writing on Facebook, Liam Taylor wrote: "What a clown. I wondered what The Mask was up to these days - somebody stop him!"

David Bradley added: "What's the Mask doing in Birmingham?"

Craig Yates said: "he looks like a Smurf Gimp who has been caught short and about to wet himself"

Annabel Demaine put: "Jesus Christ.... He should be charged with crimes against fashion an all. What is that on his face."

Gareth Lloyd commented: "Check the local Ann Summer reps for gimp mask sales."

John Leach said: "Serious crime and I hope he's caught before he may do it again. He does look like he's got a washing up glove on his head though."

Steven Pearce added: "Blue Power Ranger gone rogue? There's only one group of people who can stop him...Go Go Power Rangers."

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We're appealing for information following a knifepoint robbery at a shop in Birmingham.

"A fully masked man entered Quinton Premier Supermarket in Simmons Drive, Woodgate, and threatened a worker with a knife before fleeing with cash on 17 December.

"We appreciate these images do not clearly identify the suspect but we're hoping to trigger the memories of anyone who was in the area at around 6.45pm, and may have information which can help us.

"We believe there are people out there who will know who was responsible."
