Rooney Says He's Staying Put At England

Wayne Rooney has said he has no plans to step away from international football and intends to remain as England captain for the 2018 World Cup qualification campaign.

England crashed out of Euro 2016 on Monday after losing 2-1 to Iceland at the Allianz Riviera in Nice.

Rooney produced a lacklustre display in midfield as England suffered arguably their worst ever defeat in a major tournament.

Roy Hodgson resigned as England's manager immediately after the loss, but the Manchester United captain insisted he had no plans to end his own international career.

Rooney said he would fight for his place under the Three Lions' new boss, and intends to face Slovakia on 4 September as England commence their qualification campaign for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

"It's disappointing ... but I enjoy and am proud playing for England," Rooney told the Daily Mirror.

"I'll be interested to see who the next manager is. If selected, I'll certainly be there."

Rooney expressed his regret at Hodgson's resignation and said he believed England's players let the 68-year-old down in France.

"We can't forget he's brought a lot of young players through and I think the future's bright for England," he added.

"Unfortunately it hasn't happened in this tournament, but hopefully in the future there's good things to come and although it's difficult to say and see that now, I think Roy has been good to the players and I'll be thanking him."
