A former Whitehaven councillor, described as a “predatory paedophile”, has been jailed after sending explicit messages to an undercover police officer who he thought was a 14-year-old boy.

Shop worker fined for selling alcohol to 14-year-old

A shop-worker has been fined £500 after selling alcohol to a 14-year-old.

Jaspreet Deo, 27, was working at Poundsavers on Hunters Drive in Seaton on November 13 last year, at the time of the offence.

Workington Magistrates’ Court heard that a test purchase operation was being carried out by police.

Drink driver twice over the limit

A drink-driver was more than twice the legal limit when she was caught behind the wheel on a main road.

Louise Carini, 39, was driving a Seat Ibiza on the Loop Road in Whitehaven, between Parton and the Pelican Garage, on May 28.

Longtown man spat at neighbour in row over cannabis smell

A BITTER dispute in Longtown over the smell of people smoking cannabis boiled over as a man spat into the face of a neighbour.

A prosecutor at Carlisle’s Rickergate court outlined how the issue between 34-year-old Mathew Burge and the neighbour came to a head on November 28 last year after the victim propped open a communal fire door.

Carlisle men sentenced over illegal road race ended by crash

TWO motorists took part in a dangerous high-speed race along north Cumbrian roads before one crashed into a field, injuring two women passengers.

Thomas Bright, 23, was originally charged with causing one of his passengers serious injury by dangerous driving but a legal review later concluded the woman’s injuries could not be classified as serious and so that charge was dropped.

But both Bright and his co-defendant Nathan Addis, also 23, admitted dangerous driving, and both were given suspended jail terms.

Carlisle Crown Court heard that the two defendants took part in what was essentially a “pre-arranged” street race.

They met for this purpose at a layby on the outskirts of Cargo village north of Carlisle on the evening of November 29, 2019.

Eden Valley man had drug 'hidden in underwear'

AN EDEN Valley man who had drugs hidden in his underwear when police stopped the car he was travelling in has been fined.

Christopher Turnbull-Allen, 35, committed the offence on May 30, Carlisle’s Rickergate court heard. The defendant, of Westgarth Court, Kirkby Stephen, pleaded guilty to possessing the class B drug mephedrone.

Woman accused of exposing herself in play park and dancing naked at window in Whitehaven

A WOMAN has appeared in court charged with indecent exposure after allegedly exposing herself to children at a play park and dancing naked at a window.

Ju Singh, 41, of Duke Street, Whitehaven, faces a total of 12 charges, including six charges of indecent exposure, which are alleged to have taken place between June 1 and 11, 2022, and August 1, 2021 and June 11, 2022.

Workington man proudly ran 'cannabis business'

A WORKINGTON man with a low opinion of cocaine dealers was nevertheless proudly running a 'small business' growing and selling cannabis, a court heard.

Andrew Carney, 43, even advertised the class B drug on Facebook.

The defendant, of Fisher Street, Workington, was charged after police raided his home and found that he was cultivating a cannabis crop with a potential street value of £9,600, part of an enterprise that had spanned several months.
