The Royal Family has shared a collection of photographs of Prince Philip over the years, to celebrate his work on the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

The images were posted on the official Instagram page for the Palace alongside details of his work with the program, as members of the public commented to share their own experiences.

The post included a quote from Prince Philip explaining that he envisioned the scheme as a "do-it-yourself growing up kit" which certainly seemed to be true for those who took part.

“I loved my DofE Gold, gave me so much confidence and was the first experience I had of really being challenged physically and mentally without relying on my parents,” said one commenter.

Another agreed, writing, “I loved the D of E award scheme! I grew so much as a result of it. Such a wonderful legacy.”

Others left messages of gratitude for the Duke’s enduring work with the scheme over the decades, saying, “Thank you for all you have done,” and describing him as a “great role model.”

The post explains that there are usually more than 300,000 people across the UK taking part in DofE programs at any one time and that, “The Duke attended over 500 Gold Award ceremonies, attended by up to 300 young people” since the scheme was founded in 1956.

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award operates in more than 168 countries with over 13 million people having taken part in it, creating a legacy for young people worldwide.

Both the UK DofE and International Award schemes are collating accounts and experiences of those who have taken part of the years to create nationwide and global collections of Award memories.

Prince Philip sadly passed away on Friday 9 April. His funeral will take place tomorrow (Saturday 17 April) at 15:00 BST.
