Rural Motorists To Get 5p-A-Litre Fuel Rebate

Rural Motorists To Get 5p-A-Litre Fuel Rebate

Motorists in rural areas are set to enjoy discounted prices at the pumps.

The EU-approved measure allows forecourts to claim back up to 5p a litre on diesel and unleaded duty, while passing on the discount to motorists.

A total of 17 areas have been granted permission to apply the rebate from 31 May.

Motorists in the areas currently face higher pump prices because of extra transportation costs and lower demand.

Some areas within North Yorkshire, Northumberland, North Yorkshire and Devon, along with the Highlands and Argyll and Bute, are eligible.

Rebates have been in operation for the most rural island areas of Britain since 2012.

Treasury Chief Secretary Danny Alexander MP said: "People will see lower prices from the end of May, with filling stations in the 17 selected areas able to register for the scheme from 1 April.

"Combined with the current fall in oil prices and the freeze in fuel duty rates nationwide, this 5p discount on fuel prices will provide a much-needed boost to families who face the highest fuel prices."

In January, the Government estimated that the price cuts would benefit 125,000 people, who currently face some of the highest pump prices in the nation.

Criteria in selecting the areas included a minimum 100-mile distance from a refinery, low population density and a comparative price analysis with the existing island areas.

Earlier this year the Government released a list of the rebate areas .
