As of the beginning of October, there were about 2,000 Russian military personnel in Belarus, the monitoring group Belarusian Hajun reported on Oct. 16 on its channel on the Telegram messenger app.

In September, the situation with the Russian military in Belarus remained virtually unchanged. In addition, no increase in the number of Russian troops was observed and there are currently no prerequisites for a significant increase, Belarusian Hajun said.

At the same time, some Russian military personnel continue to be stationed at the following military facilities in Belarus:

  • Mozyr (Bokov) and Zyabrovka airfields – up to 600 people;

  • The Baranovichi radio technical hub and the 43rd Vileika communication hub – up to 1,450 people.

Earlier, Belarusian Hajun reported that between July and August 2023, the Russian military contingent in Belarus decreased to about 2,100 people.

Before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the regime of dictator Alexander Lukashenko provided the territory of Belarus to the Russian invasion forces, from where they, in particular, tried to attack Kyiv. The Russian army also launched missile attacks on Ukrainian cities from Belarusian territory.

Belarusian troops are not directly involved in the fighting, but Ukraine fears that Minsk could still use its armed forces to re-invade from the north.

On June 22, the spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Andriy Demchenko, said that the number of Russian troops in Belarus did not exceed 1,500.

On July 14, Demchenko announced the complete withdrawal of the Russian contingent from Belarus as part of the rotation.

On Sept. 7, a spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service said that Russia had also withdrawn the current contingent in Belarus on a rotational basis.
