Ryder Cup 2021 LIVE! Day 2 stream, results, latest score updates as USA lead Europe 11-5

Ryder Cup Day 2 - LIVE!

Europe had a mountain to climb heading into Saturday’s fourballs as they trailed the USA 9-3 after three chastening sessions.

They have a six-point gap to overcome in Sunday’s singles after sharing the four balls 2-2.

A fired-up Shane Lowry led Europe to a crucial point, keeping his nerve to halve the 18th with one of the shots of the day. World number one Jon Rahm produced yet another inspired performance to lead Europe’s crack Spanish pairing to another vital point alongside Sergio Garcia.

Rahm won three of the opening four holes and then nullified a stunning tee shot from Jordan Spieth at the seventh by taking another with a brilliant long putt.

In slumping to his third defeat of the week, however, Rory McIlroy looked particularly out of sorts.

USA need just three and a half points from Sunday’s play to win the Ryder Cup.

Back to the first three and match no3. Tommy Fleetwood’s tee shot comes down with snow on it and is so far right that it might actually be okay, beyond the bunkers.

Hovland, playing his fourth match of the weekend, creams his up to the front of the green before Scheffler puts his in a horrendous position right inside the face of the greenside bunker.

Bryson’s got the distance but not the accuracy. Chance coming for Europe.

Koepka/Spieth vs Garcia/Rahm

On to the second match. Sergio Garcia was sensational this morning but he’s lucky not to pick out the sand off the tee here. Jon Rahm steps up and pings his straight down the middle, though, and leaves it just shy of the green.

Koepka’s shoved his a mile right in some thick stuff so Spieth could do with picking out the fairway here. And he does.

18:39 , Malik Ouzia

Finau/English A/S Lowry/Hatton

Good putt from Lowry, nicely judged and he should make birdie from there if it’s not conceded so one of the Americans will need to hole theirs.

Oof. Finau has the easier one but he won’t even need to get the putter out of the bag as English finds the middle of the cup.

They’re going to make Lowry putt and he obliges.

18:36 , Malik Ouzia

Finau/English vs Lowry/Hatton

English leaves his approach well short so there’s a bit of pressure here on Finau but he pitches his much closer to the flag.

Still no gimme though and Lowry’s got that long birdie putt coming up.

Finau/English vs Lowry/Hatton

18:29 , Malik Ouzia

Shane Lowry steps up and drives the green off the tee. Not bad. He’s pumped.

Hatton started really well yesterday afternoon and then faded badly but he’s on the fairway, as is Finau, a little bit further down the line. English, too - those are four excellent tee shots.

A quick reminder of this morning’s foursomes results before we start...

18:28 , Malik Ouzia

  • Garcia/Rahm bt Koepka/Berger 3&1

  • Johnson/Morikawa bt Casey/Hatton 2&1

  • Thomas/Spieth bt Hovland/Wiesberger 2UP

  • Schauffele/Cantlay bt Westwood/Fitzpatrick 2&1

18:24 , Malik Ouzia

Here we go then, Lowry and Hatton making their way onto the first tee.

It’s not just important that they win their match, but that they get ahead and get some blue on the board early. Europe need momentum.

18:19 , Malik Ouzia

Wow. If Europe needed any motivation, the Americans quite clearly think this is all over because Justin Thomas and Daniel Berger are out on the first tee chugging beers thrown on by the fans!

Revised timings

18:16 , Malik Ouzia

We were a little late finishing those foursomes so there’s been a slight alteration to the original timings for the fourballs.

Saturday fourballs (from 6:26pm)

  • 6.26pm - Finau/English vs Lowry/Hatton

  • 6.42pm - Koepka/Spieth vs Rahm/Garcia

  • 6.58pm - Scheffler/DeChambeau vs Fleetwood/Hovland

  • 7.14pm - Johnson/Morikawa vs Poulter/McIlroy

18:13 , Malik Ouzia

Justin Thomas is given a breather this afternoon but he’s out on the first tee whipping the crowd up.

Shane Lowry and Tyrell Hatton, who I think is a little fortunate to be back out there, know they have to get Europe off to a good start against Harris English and Tony Finau, who was magnificent yesterday and unfortunate not to play this morning.

18:08 , Malik Ouzia

So, having been benched for the first time in his Ryder Cup career for Saturday’s foursomes, Rory McIlroy returns alongside Ian Poulter to take on the fearsome American duo of Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa, who have won both of their matches together in foursomes.

Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm have delivered Europe’s only two wins of the weekend so far and are now paired in fourballs for the first time against Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth.

Here are this afternoon’s pairings...

18:03 , Malik Ouzia

Saturday fourballs (from 6:10pm)

  • 6.10pm - Finau/English vs Lowry/Hatton

  • 6.26pm - Koepka/Spieth vs Rahm/Garcia

  • 6.42pm - Scheffler/DeChambeau vs Fleetwood/Hovland

  • 6.58pm - Johnson/Morikawa vs Poulter/McIlroy

17:56 , Malik Ouzia

Well, what now for Europe? They probably need to win 4-0 this evening to have a realistic chance of pulling anything back in the singles tomorrow.

We’ll have the pairings for the fourballs shortly...

17:49 , Malik Ouzia

Schauffele/Cantlay bt Westwood/Fitzpatrick 2&1

And this one’s done, too!

Schauffele rolls it up close from across the green and Europe conceded.

It’s another pasting in the morning foursomes.

17:48 , Malik Ouzia

Thomas/Spieth bt Hovland/Wiesberger 2UP

Yep, hats off, hands shaken. Hovland and Wiesberger were three-up at one point in this one but the Americans fight back and that is a hammer blow.

17:47 , Malik Ouzia

1UP Thomas/Spieth vs Hovland/Wiesberger

It’s a wonderful shot from Hovland from that drop to about four feet from the flag but it’s not going to be enough, I’m afraid.

17:44 , Malik Ouzia

2UP Schauffele/Cantlay vs Westwood/Fitzpatrick

And now Westwood, going for broke on the par-three 17th can’t find the narrow strip of green at the back where the flag is. Off the side and if Cantlay puts this on the dancefloor off the tee it’s probably curtains.

17:40 , Malik Ouzia

1UP Thomas/Spieth vs Hovland/Wiesberger

Oh dear. Wiesberger finds the creek with his second shot and that, I’m afraid, will be the end of Europe’s challenge in this one.

17:37 , Malik Ouzia

2UP Schauffele/Cantlay vs Westwood/Fitzpatrick

He’s made one!

Lee Westwood rolls in an excellent birdie putt after Cantlay fails with his and the lead is back to two with two to play.

17:34 , Malik Ouzia

3UP Schauffele/Cantlay vs Westwood/Fitzpatrick

Pin-high from Xander, though not quite on line. Fitzpatrick’s lands on the downslope and runs on past the hole.

You can’t see the Americans not closing this one out here.

17:31 , Malik Ouzia

1UP Thomas/Spieth vs Hovland/Wiesberger

We saw Spieth play an outrageous shot from down here yesterday but this time he can’t clear the ridge and Europe are going to surely pull one back and take it to the 18th here.

In fact, they have already because Thomas can’t get it up there either and he picks up. Game on.
