Watch: Baron Cohen responds to Rudy Giuliani

Sacha Baron Cohen has thanked Donald Trump for providing “free publicity” for the Borat sequel, as the comedian hit back after the US president called him “a creep”.

Trump was asked about the potential security breaches shown in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which sees actress Maria Bakalova, as Borat’s daughter Tutar, being taken into the White House.

Trump told reporters: “Years ago, you know, he tried to scam me. That’s a phony guy. And I don’t find him funny... to me, he was a creep.”

Cohen, as his character Ali G, famously duped Trump into a spoof interview in 2005 in which he pitched him the idea for an ice cream glove, before the future president walked out.

Cohen has now tweeted back, branding Trump “a racist buffoon”.

“Donald — I appreciate the free publicity for Borat! I admit, I don’t find you funny either. But yet the whole world laughs at you. I’m always looking for people to play racist buffoons, and you’ll need a job after Jan. 20. Let’s talk!” he wrote.

The movie, released 14 years after Baron Cohen's first feature-length Borat film, finds the Kazakh journalist returning to the US to offer his daughter's hand to vice president Mike Pence.

Bakalova features in footage from the movie in the White House press briefing room, and in the grounds with reporter Chanel Rion, from the One America News Network.

She also briefly meets with Donald Trump Jr, but it is the footage of her meeting Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani that has hit headlines.

In a scene in which Tutar, who is portrayed as 15 in the film, attempts to seduce Giuliani, the lawyer is seen lying on a bed, and appears to have his hand in his trousers.

Giuliani has denied any wrongdoing, tweeting: “I was tucking in my shirt after taking off the recording equipment. At no time before, during, or after the interview was I ever inappropriate.

“If Sacha Baron Cohen implies otherwise he is a stone-cold liar.”

Speaking to Good Morning America, Cohen said: “If the president's lawyer found what he did there appropriate behaviour, then heaven knows what he's done with other female journalists in hotel rooms.

"I urge everyone to watch the movie. It is what it is. He did what he did. And make your own mind up. It was pretty clear to us.”

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is streaming now on Amazon.
