SAINTS are reportedly trying to hijack Bayer Leverkusen’s transfer for Manchester City youngster Samuel Edozie.

The 19-year-old left-winger is currently training with City’s under-23s and was said to be set for a move to the German outfit. Kicker detailed it was a deal worth up to six million Euros.

Edozie made his first-team debut for Pep Guardiola’s side in last season’s community shield, but has not played with the senior team since.

He is a regular at Premier League 2 level, scoring five times in 27 appearances over the previous two campaigns.

As well as boasting UEFA Youth League experience, Edozie has won the English title at under-23 and under-18 level while at Manchester City, since moving north from Millwall.

The England youth international was seemingly set for the Bundesliga, but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Saints have swooped late to try and snatch a deal.

He says Leverkusen had agreed a fee with City for Edozie, but that Saints are now joining the race and trying to hijack the move. Saints’ new head of senior recruitment is former City youth recruitment chief Joe Shields.

Saints have already signed two of the most promising youngsters in Manchester City’s academy this summer, with permanent deals for goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu and midfielder Romeo Lavia.

They also reportedly had a bid rejected for 19-year-old striker Liam Delap, and could now have turned their attentions to a promising number 10 option in Edozie.

The starlet’s contract at City is said to expire next summer, which opens the door for a reasonable fee is Edozie wants to seek first-team football elsewhere.
