Sanditon season 2 has revealed a first look at several new characters set to join the period drama during its new batch of episodes.

The Jane Austen-inspired drama's second season will see the return of characters including heroine Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams), while we'll also be introduced to a collection of new characters who are sure to make their mark on the seaside resort.

Among the new faces is Alexander Colbourne (War & Peace star Ben Lloyd-Hughes), who is "thoughtful, cerebral, and antisocial to the point of reclusiveness". He rules over his family seat at Heyrick Park, alongside his daughter Leo Colbourne (Flora Mitchell) and his niece Augusta Markham (The Great's Eloise Webb).

Also arriving on Sanditon's shores are a group of military men, who are led by the dashing Colonel Francis Lennox (Shadow and Bone actor Tom Weston-Jones) – who will very quickly set his sights on wooing a particular young lady. With the army making Sanditon their new base, there's going to be lots of change in the air.

Meanwhile, Captain Declan Fraser (Normal People's Frank Blake) and Captain William Carter (Maxim Ays) will both begin an acquaintance with Charlotte's spirited younger sister Alison Heywood (Outlander actress Rosie Graham), who has come to Sanditon to pursue her own romantic dream. But will she find love or heartbreak?

Tom Parker (Kris Marshall) is striving to rebuild Sanditon, but there are many unforeseen issues awaiting him which could spell trouble. Elsewhere, the secrets and lies of the dysfunctional Denham family threaten to rock the very foundations of the seaside town.

Finally, Georgiana Lambe (Crystal Clarke) is keen to forge her own identity and she soon gets up to mischief in the name of love. She will be meeting the enigmatic and worldly Charles Lockhart (Versailles star Alexander Vlahos), who manages to be a Byronic artist, lover, critic and explorer all at the same time – but will she find love or risk being lonelier than ever before?
