Savory cupcakes are officially a thing

Cupcakes are one of the most popular desserts, but some people are having cupcakes for dinner! Savory cupcakes may feel very wrong, but one home chef is trying to prove that they can be oh so right.

August DeWindt, aka @theres.food.at.home on TikTok, posted hot wing “cupcakes” on the platform to a surprisingly positive reception.

First, she starts with mashed potatoes — which will eventually become the frosting. And don’t skimp on the cream, butter or sour cream, she said! You want this stuff to come out as fluffy as a cloud.

Then she makes some corn muffins, which will act as the “cake” part of the savory cupcake.

Now for the chicken wings. DeWindt stresses that you need to season these bad boys generously. She uses Creole seasoning, paprika, garlic powder, black pepper and Italian seasoning. Then she fries ‘em up until they’re “nice and crispy” and finally soaks them in Buffalo sauce.

Now with all the elements ready, she assembles the savory cupcake! She pipes the mashed potatoes onto the corn muffins and then delicately places a hot wing on top of each one as the pièce de résistance.

The video has racked up 1.7 million views, and TikTokers have filled the comments section with approval.

“[A]ll other types of cupcakes are officially canceled, we don’t need them anymore,” wrote one savory cupcake enthusiast.

“I thought that was a regular cupcake with frosting with a wing on top. But [that looks] goood,” wrote a TikToker who clearly had a roller-coaster of emotions watching the video.

Other TikTokers have put their own spin on savory cupcakes.

This woman took hers to another level by carving out a scoop in her cornbread base and filling it with mac ‘n’ cheese.

Another home chef made vegan savory cupcakes using mashed potatoes, vegan meatballs and gravy.

But if you’re still not convinced to try savory cupcakes, maybe cupcakes that just look savory are more up your alley.
