Can you still move house? Can tradespeople enter your home? And will hardware stores remain open? The second lockdown in England, to take place from Thursday 5th November until Wednesday 2nd December, has posed many questions for homeowners and those buying or selling their home.

Robert Jenrick, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, has shared a housing market update ahead of the new month-long lockdown in England, which will see 'stay at home' guidance and the closure of non-essential retail.

Jenrick confirmed that:

  • renters and homeowners will still be able to move

  • removal firms and estate agents can operate

  • construction sites can and should continue

  • tradespeople will be able to enter homes.

However, the Covid-19 safety and social distancing guidance should be strictly followed at all times.

In a Twitter Q&A, Jenrick revealed the following...

Q: Can I still move house?

A: 'Yes – the housing market will remain open throughout this period. Everyone should continue to play their part in reducing the spread of the virus by following the current guidance.'

Q: Are the mortgage holidays ending?

A: 'No – the mortgage payment holidays will no longer end today and there will be further information published by the FCA on Monday.'

Q: Should I still go to work on a construction site next week?

A: 'Yes – anyone who cannot work effectively from home should travel to work and follow the relevant guidance for their workplace. This is essential to keeping the country operating and supporting vital sectors.'

Q: Can a tradesman or women come into my home?

A: 'Yes – tradespeople like electricians, plumbers, repairers of domestic appliances can enter your home. They will need to follow social distancing guidance that has already been published.'

Q: Can hardware stores and builders merchants remain open?

A: 'Yes. Hardware stores and those selling building supplies will be able to operate.'
